Update March 29, 2020: KLM has now retired its entire Boeing 747 fleet
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is one of the fewer airlines that is still operating some flights with a Boeing 747, one of my favorite types of aircraft. In April 2018, I had the chance to fly on one of the airline’s five 747-400s between Amsterdam and Paramaribo in World Business Class. I booked these flights for just 62,500 Flying Blue miles plus about $ 380 in taxes and fees using a Promo Award sale from the airline. An opportunity I couldn’t turn down as I’ve always dreamed of flying The Queen Of The Skys in World Business Class. In this review, I write about my flight from Paramaribo to Amsterdam on the upper deck.

KLM Boeing 747 World Business Class Boarding
After a short visit to the Sabakoe Vip Lounge, it was time to board for my flight back to Amsterdam. I was again excited to fly The Queen of the Skies. When I boarded the aircraft, I was warmly welcomed by the crew. This time, I was seated on the upper deck so I was requested to take the stairs.
The upper deck of the Boeing 747-400 features a total of 20 seats in World Business Class in a 2-2 configuration. Unfortunately, there are no solo seats like on the lower deck. Check the seat map for more detailed information. One of the flight attendants requested me to put my carry-on in one of the luggage comportments as this wouldn’t fit in the overhead lockers.
My seat
Unlike on the lower deck, all the seats are somehow the same. I was one of the last passengers that was boarding so almost all the seats were already taken as it would be quite a busy flight. Upon making my reservation, I assigned myself seat 78A, in the rear of the cabin.
The seats are comfortable and are offering a lot of space, also for storage. However, not many privacy is offered here. A few moments later, flight attendants came through the cabin to introduce themselves. As a pre departure drink, I went for a champagne. Also amenity kits were distributed.
The in-flight entertainment screen in front of me was huge. However, the resolution was not that good. Below the screen, I found my headset which turned out to be of good quality. KLM has a decent selection of series and films so you won’t get bored during a long flight. Unfortunately, no wifi is offered on this Boeing 747.
In-Flight Dining
About half an hour after take off, warm towels were distributed. Then, I grabbed the menu to see what to have for dinner during this flight. After a flight attendant took my order, I was asked for what to drink. I decided to go for the Flying Dutchman cocktail which was served with nuts and a glass of water.
The appetizer consisted of a mixed salad with poached fish and blueberry sauce. Also some bread and olive oil were served. For drink, I decided to switch to champagne.
Also during this flight, I experienced a friendly and proactive service of the crew. As soon as I finished my appetizer, a flight attendant asked me if I was ready for the main course. There were 3 options of which were 2 international. I decided to go for the local option which was a Surinam rice dish mocks ales with fried fish, vegetables and fried plantain.
For dessert, there were 4 options. I could have chosen for the lemon mousse, Tartallete ganache or fresh seasonal fruit but I decided to go for the cheese plate which tasted not bad at all in combination with Vintage Port. To finish, I took a tea which was served with a chocolate.
Then it was time to go to sleep. A flight attendant requested me to close the window shades and also a bottle of water was brought to me. I put my seat in full flat position and prepared myself for a good night rest. The seat offers a lot of space and I had a comfortable night rest. This is what I really love about flying business class!
Breakfast
I woke up when the lights turned on and noticed that it was soon time for breakfast. The menu showed three options. I went for the yoghurt with grannie which was served with fresh fruit, hard-boiled egg, cheese, jam, hot rolls and croissants. For drink, I decided to take a coffee and orange juice. Everything tasted really good and regularly, I was asked for a refill or another piece of bread.
After the meal service, a flight attendant came through the cabin with the nice little Dutch houses. This time, I took number 7. About half an hour later, we landed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. I thanked the crew for the service on board and went downstairs to leave the aircraft.
KLM Boeing 747 WBC Upper Deck Bottom Line
I certainly enjoyed my flight on the upper deck in KLM’s World Business Class. Being seated on the upper deck of the Boeing 747 definitely feels special. This sets the Boeing 747 apart from other KLM aircrafts. However, I have mixed feelings about the twin seats on board. These are great for traveling together but not much privacy is offered when traveling alone. I prefer the solo seats on the lower deck when traveling alone.
During this flight, I experienced a friendly and proactive service from the flight attendants. Unfortunately, the food wasn’t that special compared to what other airlines are offering. It is definitely something KLM can improve to make the passenger experience even more outstanding. Apart from this, I had a fantastic flights. I love the little Dutch houses that passengers can collect. I’m excited to fly KLM World Business Class again next year on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner! I certainly can recommend KLM World Business Class, especially for the discount during the Promo Rewards every month. It’s definitely worth to pay the extra taxes and fees to get a great value out of your miles!
What is your experience with KLM Boeing 747 World Business Class? Have you flown them already or are you planning to make a flight with them? Let me know your questions and thoughts in the comments below!
We love KLM’s uniqueness – they do an amazing job of showing off their country’s heritage & culture! Ranging from their Blue Delft houses filled with Bols jenever, to their Delft-styled safety video, to their Dutch house chocolates, to their Dutch house wallpaper in aeroplane toilets.
And thanks to their “final drink on the house” for World Business Class passengers, we have many fond memories of some pretty awesome flights with them.
I totally agree, and can’t wait to fly with them again
