Singapore is a fantastic place and one of my favorites in Asia. The country is known as one of the best places to live in the world as the quality of life is really high. Everything in the city looks organized and clean. I’ve visited Singapore multiple times, whether it was just a layover or as a place to visit. In this article, I want to provide you with my recommended spots in Singapore.
Merlion Square
The Merlion Square is one of the most popular places in Singapore and a must-see. Here you will find the popular lion statue with the skyline on the background. It is also a great place to start your tour in Singapore. Everything can easily be reached via public transportation and especially by the MRT, the subway of Singapore. Just take the subway from the airport and exit at Raffles Square station to arrive at this popular place.
At night, this place is even more beautiful. On the other side of the water, you will see the Marina Bay Sands hotel. The spitting lion statue with the Marina Bay Sands building in the background is the perfect image of Singapore!
Go here at night because every day at 8pm and 9pm and also on Friday and Saturday at 10pm, there is a fantastic light show. The event, called Spectra, is definitely the most viewed shows on the promenade and is totally free of charge. It’s a show with lasers, fountains, and visual projections. At this time, Singapore comes to life!
Marina Bay Sands
The Marina Bay Sands itself is one of the most popular places in Singapore. This $8 billion, 2,500+ room integrated resort opened its doors in 2010 and is one of the most expensive buildings in the world. The part on top of the 3 towers is shaped like a boat and features the SkyPark infinity pool with restaurants and a rooftop bar. I stayed at the Marina Bay Sands last year and it was definitely one of my best hotel stays ever. You can read my entire review here.
Besides the infinity pool area that is reserved for resort guests only, the Marina Bay Sands also has the Cé La Vie rooftop bar next to the infinity pool that is accessible for everyone, even if you don’t stay at the resort. Although you have to pay the entrance fee of $ 22 SGD (about $ 16 USD), which includes a free drink once you are on top. A cocktail that I can recommend to everyone is the Singapore Sling.
I’ve been here multiple times before and I’m always enjoying the ambiance and the views, especially during sunset when the light show starts.
From the Marina Bay Sands, there is also a bridge to the Gardens of the Bay. You can access this park for free and I would highly recommend you to do so if you have the time. It’s unbelievable how many flowers from all over the world have found live here. Like with the Spectra light show, here you also have the Gardens by the Bay Light Show. It’s every day at 7:45 and 8:45 and not to miss out!
Clarke Quay
Another cool place in Singapore is Clarke Quay. From Merlion Square, just walk alongside the Singapore River and after 10 minutes, you will see some colouful houses with restaurants and terraces on the water. Clarke Quay is a perfect place in Singpaore to have lunch or dinner or to just have a Tiger beer during a walk through the city. It’s also a great place to meet people.
At night, the whole area around Clarke Quay is even more beautiful with all the light on.
China Town
Singapore is a city with many nationalities and the Chinese are well represented. Close to Clarke Quay, you will find Chinatown. At just a 10 minutes walk from there, you are surprised of still being in the same city.
Orchard Road
Do you like shopping? Then go to Orchard Road! Here you will find many shopping centres and all the popular brands you will expect in big cities like Singapore. There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars in between the shops with nice view over the street to watch people. At night, the whole street looks even more beautiful when all the city lights are on.
Botanical Gardens
Are you looking for some nature in the middle of the city? Then take the subway to the Botanical Gardens for a nice walk in this fantastic park.
You can access almost the entire park for free but it is worth to get access to the paid area where you can also admire all the beautiful flowers here.
Sentosa Island
Interested in the beach or do you want to stay away from the city? Then go to Sentosa island by taking a bus or subway to Harbour Front station. From there you can walk or taking the train to Sentosa Island where you can find beaches, a theme park, and so much more. You can even go bungee jumping here!
I would recommend to spend at least one day at Sentosa Island as there is so much to do here. There is even a cable car from where you have a fantastic view over the whole area.
In this article, I have provided you with several tips on what you can do during a visit to Singapore. Whether you are visiting the city for a longer period of time or just during a layover, Singapore has so much to offer. I have visited Singapore multiple times and thus developed a good impression of the city. If you have just a short amount of time in Singapore, I would go at least Merlion Square because it has a nice view of the Marina Bay Sands. This square is one of the most popular places in the city. Plan your visit beforehand so you save more time.
