My trip to Malta in October last year brought me to one of the most extraordinary Hilton hotels in Europe I stayed at so far. The Hilton Malta, located in St. Julians, is 20 minutes away from the airport by car and just a few steps away from the Ross busstation. The hotel was build in 2000 but renovated in 2016 and sits prettily in a cove called Portomaso Marina on the Mediterranean Sea. In St. Julians, you will find multiple clubs, bars and restaurants.
Check-in
At around 9:30am, I stepped foot in the lobby which looked nice and modern. The seating area offers a nice view over the basement floor as well as the pool area outside. I was warmly welcomed by the concierge and walked to the reception.
I explained that I made a reservation for the next night and that I had contacted the hotel one day before to get an early check-in. The receptionist informed me that I got upgraded to an Executive Room and therefore I could check in at the Executive Lounge at the 9th floor.
Executive Room
My room was located on the 8th floor, about 5 minutes walking from the lounge. The room is spacious and looks modern. I found a comfortable kingsize bed with a nice light decoration. Reading lights can be found on each side of the bed. Next to the bed is the seating area with a nice painting on the wall.
In front of the bed, I found a television and furniture with a desk on the left side. There is also a reading light and mirror on the wall. Next to furniture, I found the temperature controls as wells as a wardrobe. On the right side on the desk, I found the coffee and tea facilities and a minibar.
On the table in the seating area, I found 2 bottles of water. About half an hour later, my welcome gift was brought to me and this consisted of some chocolates.
Behind the seating area is the balcony facing the east, certainly nice to pick up the first rays of sunshine here in the morning.
Bathroom
The entrance of the bathroom is next to the bed. There is a double sink which is quite exceptional in an executive room. I found multiple towels and wash cloths everywhere and there is also plenty of choice in shampoo and soap.
Apart from a toilet and shower cabin with both a sprayer and rain shower, there is also a bathtub. There is a window between the bathtub and the bedroom so it’s possible to watch tv from here. Also in the bath tube, I found amenities like soap, shampoo and wash cloths.
Executive Lounge
As I mentioned above, the executive lounge is located on the 9th floor. If you are granted access to the lounge, you can open the door with your key card from 6am until 10pm. The lounge looks nice and modern and is divided into a seating area and a buffet area.
Breakfast is served from 7:30am until 10:30am. I’ve been here for breakfast twice and certainly liked the buffet. In between you can come here for coffee, tea and cold drinks and there is an afternoon tea with snacks from 3pm until 5:30pm.
In the evening from 6pm until 8pm, there is a pre dinner buffet where you can enjoy hot snacks, spirits and cocktails. Cocktail hour can get quite busy but luckily the buffet was replenished very often.
Apart from dining in the seating area, you also can sit outside and enjoy the wonderful views over the pool area. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to enjoy the sunset from here as the terrace is facing to the east.
Other facilities
Apart from the Executive Lounge, the hotel offers spa and jacuzzi facilities, a fitness center, a tennis court, a game room and 3 restaurants. In the lobby is a concierge service which has helped me planning my trip to Comino and Gozo Island. You also can find an ATM machine, gift shop and a business center in the hotel. What I liked in particular was the immense swimming pool.
There are plenty of sun loungers around the pool as well as on the artificial beach. A little further, I found a bar where alcoholic drinks can be ordered. I went for a glass of champagne which I enjoyed poolside.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served in the Oceana Restaurant on the third floor. You have the choice to eat either inside or at the terrance outside with views of the pool area. I experienced an excellent service here! After I took a seat, I directly went asked what to drink.
The buffet itself looked great and I found everything I would expect from a good breakfast buffet. Apart from the standard options like a selection of bread, croissants, eggs and salad, there are also Maltese specialities.
The Oceana Restaurant is an all-day dining venue and a much quieter place in the evening without the breakfast crowds. Apart from a buffet dinner buffet, you also have the option to order from the menu. There is wide selection of Maltese and traditional Mediterranean specialties here.
Hilton Malta Bottom Line
I definitely had a pleasant stay at Hilton Malta. The location in St. Julians is not bad at all and although you will not get bored at the resort itself, the bars and clubs in this town are definitely worth a visit. I absolutely like the building of the hotel with a modern an spacious lobby. My expectations of the Executive Room turned out to be more than positive. I especially liked the balcony and bathroom with double sink and bath tube.
Everywhere in the hotel, I experienced a great and friendly service. The spacious Executive Lounge offers a great buffet, both for breakfast and evening snacks. I very liked the roof terrance with views over the pool area. The pool area itself is definitely an enjoyable place to spend the afternoon. The Oceana Restaurant is not only a good place for breakfast, it also offers some great Maltese specialities. I definitely can recommend Hilton Malta and will stay here again for sure!
